MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is reminding people who find young animals in the wild that they should be left alone.

It is against the law to pick up wildlife and it can do more harm than good.

Handling wildlife can expose them to disease and angry wildlife mothers can be threatening to humans.

The state says that mothers of animals frequently leave their offspring for long periods of time, but they will return. Young birds on the ground may be out of their nests, but their parents will still feed them.

And many species of wildlife will not feed their young if humans are nearby.
