VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - A contractor says business is picking up at the Port of Vicksburg, reflecting better performance in the economy.

The Vicksburg Post reports (https://bit.ly/2oMDAWJ ) that the tonnage for incoming freight shipments was 22 percent higher in January and February this year compared to the same two months in 2016.

Although March 2017 saw a decrease compared to March 2016, the overall numbers for this year are still looking better.

Chris Maxwell works for Kansas-based Watco Companies, which has a contract to operate the Vicksburg port. He gave numbers to the local Port Commission last week.

The port is on the Yazoo Diversion Canal near the Mississippi River.

Maxwell says the steel market is improving, which will help the port.
