BOSTON (AP) - The first Roman Catholic church to open in Boston in more than 60 years is celebrating its first Masses this weekend.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Voyage in the city’s Seaport District has two Masses scheduled for Sunday.
The 250-seat church replaces a chapel of the same name that was built in 1952 to serve the dockworkers and sailors who used to make their living in the area.
The neighborhood is now filled with sleek office buildings, luxury hotels and high-end condominiums.
The rector, the Rev. James Flavin, tells The Boston Globe the shrine’s mission is to serve those who live and work in the area.
The new $10 million church was built by a developer who wanted the old chapel’s site for an office building.
