NEW YORK (AP) - Hundreds of volunteers showed up at Kennedy International Airport to participate in emergency exercises that included simulated smoke, and fake blood and wounds.
The three-hour disaster drill was conducted Saturday by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to make sure first responders are ready in the event of a real emergency.
Some of the volunteers lay on the tarmac, awaiting help for bloodied limbs. Others boarded an aircraft and were told to scream as if in anguish. And a fuel truck was brought in, with firefighters in full protective gear ready to battle a blaze.
Pat Foye, the Port Authority’s executive director, said the agency performs the drills on a regular basis for the same reason sports teams practice before games.
