HOLLYWOOD, Md. (AP) - A historic plantation in southern Maryland is opening up its 1830s-era slave cabin to the public, part of an effort to tell the more complete story of the estate’s history.
The Baltimore Sun reports (https://bsun.md/2pmbNOj ) Sotterley Plantation in St. Mary’s County is opening the one-room wooden structure Friday as a permanent walk-through exhibit for visitors.
The plantation, a national historic landmark, is located in Hollywood, about two hours outside of Baltimore.
The cabin is being dedicated to the late genealogist Agnes Kane Callum, whose great-grandfather lived on the plantation as a slave. For years, Callum pushed for Sotterley to put a greater emphasis on the stories of the slaves who toiled there.
The newspaper reports around 200 people were expected to attend Friday’s dedication ceremony.
