MARLBORO, Mass. (AP) - The State Fire Marshal’s Office says smoking is to blame for the fire that killed a Marlboro woman Thursday.

A joint investigation by the Marlboro Fire and Police Departments and State Police found “improper disposal of smoking materials” led to the fire that spread through a duplex.

The fire marshal’s office says the blaze started in the living room of an apartment near the couch. They believe a woman living alone in the apartment tried to fight the fire herself.

Firefighters located the woman and removed her from the apartment. Residents on the other side of the building heard smoke alarms and were able to get out safely.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released.
