PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police say April had a violent start in Philadelphia with two homicides only hours into the new month.

A police spokeswoman said officers found a man lying face-down on a sidewalk in the upper Kensington neighborhood in north Philadelphia shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday. He had been shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Less than an hour later in a different part of north Philadelphia, security guards outside a nightclub saw gunfire being exchanged on the street, and both fired their weapons. A 22-year-old man shot in the head died at a hospital. A 23-year-old man was shot in the leg. Police said it’s unclear whether the men were hit by shots from the guards or from other people.
