NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Former Norfolk Treasurer Anthony Burfoot has begun his six-year federal prison sentence.
Local media report Burfoot surrendered Wednesday afternoon to U.S. marshals at the federal courthouse in Norfolk.
He maintained his innocence as he spoke with reporters on the courthouse steps. And he professed for his love for the city he once served.
The 49-year-old Burfoot was sentenced Monday for selling his votes to developers while on City Council. He also must forfeit $250,000, money the judge said Burfoot earned from the scheme.
Burfoot took bribes from people working on various construction projects in the city, including cash and use of a beach house.
Burfoot told reporters he will “spend my very last breath to clear my name.”
