TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Hikers in southern Arizona town are trying to put an end to commercial horseback rides they say are damaging a popular hiking trail.
The Arizona Daily Star reports (https://bit.ly/2oC2ZCa) Donald Harner says he’s collecting signatures for a petition to ban the guided horse tours along the Coronado National Forest trail in Oro Valley. He says the petition will be presented to forest officials before they decide on renewing the permit for commercial rides next month.
Hikers have complained of horse droppings and fewer footholds for safe climbing along the trail.
The horseback rides are offered through the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort.
Resort General Manager Ghee Alexander says guides work to maintain the trail and that losing the permit would have negative economic impacts on the area.
