IRA, Vt. (AP) - A wildlife management area in Rutland County has grown by thousands of acres.
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department says it has added nearly 3,000 acres to the 600-acre Bird Mountain Wildlife Management Area in Ira and Poultney - the biggest addition to a state wildlife management area in more than 10 years.
The department says the area is made up of Bird’s Eye Mountain, a nesting site and habitat for peregrine falcons, and surrounding lands.
The land purchase will be celebrated on Saturday May 6, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., starting at the education center at the Kehoe Green Mountain Conservation Camp in Castleton. The event is free and open to the public.
