GARDEN CITY, Ga. (AP) - A warehouse fire at an automobile scrap yard has injured two people and caused several cars to explode.

The Savannah Morning News reports (https://bit.ly/2ou0IaI) the blaze that engulfed the 20,000-square-foot metal structure shut down Garden City’s Dean Forest Road in both directions, after cars in the lot swelled from the heat and exploded. The closure stalled commercial truck traffic and students from five Savannah-Chatham schools were transported to another school for pickup.

The fire’s cause is still under investigation. Fire crews contained the fire within 45 minutes, after it started at 2:30 p.m. The Chatham Emergency Management Agency also responded to the scene because of the presence of fuel and other chemicals.

Thick smoke reduced visibility for hours after the containment. One dealership employee and one firefighter suffered minor injuries.
