PASSAIC, N.J. (AP) - A church in New Jersey is changing plans for Easter services after its ceiling collapsed.
No one was inside St. Anthony of Padua Church in Passaic when the ceiling came down hours before Holy Thursday services. The woman who cleans it had left minutes earlier when she heard a crack.
The Rev. Edgar Rivera tells The Record (https://njersy.co/2oxR8Fx ) parishioners had noticed the ceiling beginning to sag earlier in the week. Officials are awaiting insurance adjustors to assess the damage to the church, which was built in 1915.
Holy Week masses are held across the street in the parish gym to accommodate higher attendance. But Easter communion will take place at the parish center instead of inside the church.
The church is accepting donations.
