DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A graveside funeral has been scheduled for Marine Corps Pfc. James O. Whitehurst, who died during WWII.
Whitehurst’s remains were flown from Hawaii to Tallahassee, Florida, on Tuesday and then transported to Glover Funeral Home in Dothan ahead of Wednesday’s service.
The Dothan Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/2ox03aq ) the 1 p.m. funeral will be held at First Baptist Church of Cowarts.
Whitehurst, who was from Ashford, died in combat on the island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll of the Gilbert Islands on Nov. 20, 1943. He was buried there and his remains were not located and identified until 2015.
