CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - A Casper native is now in charge of a U.S. ballistic missile submarine.

Cmdr. Jon Schaffner oversees the USS Tennessee based in Georgia. Schaffner also has served on subs based in Connecticut, Washington state and Hawaii.

He graduated from Kelly Walsh High School in Casper and received a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wyoming in 2000.



The Casper Star-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2pmgUd8 ) Schaffner’s responsibilities as commander include overseeing a crew of more than 150. The crew is one of two that rotates on deployments of the USS Tennessee.

Schaffner says he visits friends and family in Wyoming between deployments.
