AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine is looking to trim the number of moose that hunters can take this year, and applications for the moose lottery are due.

Hunters have until Monday to submit paper applications to take part in the Maine moose lottery. The lottery is scheduled to be held in June and is expected to attract tens of thousands of applicants, as usual.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife wants to cut the number of moose permits to 2,080, which is 60 less than last year. The state is proposing to trim those permits from the mid-coast, Bangor and Augusta areas.

Online applications are due by May 15.
