Police in St. Louis, Missouri, are investigating the mysterious shooting death of a Ferguson protest leader.
The body of Darren Seals, 29, was found inside the charred remains of a vehicle Tuesday morning. The activist was part of the 2014 protests that gave rise to Black Lives Matter movement after 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by then-Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson. Riots broke out in November 2014 after a St. Louis County grand jury did not indict the officer.
“We were asleep and we heard this big, big boom. … The next thing we knew, it was on fire. Like, flaming,” an unidentified local woman told CBS affiliate KMOV-4 on Tuesday.
The St. Louis County Police Crimes Against Persons Unit and Bomb and Arson Unit were called to the scene early Tuesday morning, the station reported.
Officials said they are investigating Seals’ death as a homicide, although a motive is still unknown.
