The engineer who was driving the New Jersey commuter train in Thursday’s fatal crash has been identified by state officials.
Thomas Gallagher, 48, is cooperating with investigators, according to a report by TV station WABC in New York.
Local-government officials have said that while the investigation is still in its early stages, no link to terrorism is suspected. Citing “five law enforcement officials,” WNBC reported that “preliminary reports suggest the crash was either accidental or caused by operator error.”
T. Bella Dinh-Zarr, the vice chair of the National Transportation Safety Board said the engineer had been released from hospital.
One person was killed and more than 100 other people injured when the Pascack Valley Line train barrelled into the Hoboken terminal at full speed during the morning rush hour, shortly before 9 a.m.
