BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation will pay $2 million to complete the final design of a Bennington project that will connect some customers with wells contaminated by chemicals to town water.
The project would extend public water lines to homes affected by PFOA-contaminated wells.
The Bennington Banner (https://bit.ly/2dcldoH ) reports DEC Commissioner Alyssa Schuren said Wednesday the agency will pick up the tab because the company DEC believes is responsible for the contamination, Saint-Gobain, hasn’t committed to paying for the costs.
Two state lawmakers from Bennington say they’re working on new legislation that would make individuals liable for PFOA contamination in private wells.
A Saint-Gobain spokeswoman says the company has provided bottled water and filtering systems for homes as signs of its commitment to helping to solve the problem.
