INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) - An Independence man has been convicted in a deadly October 2014 shooting.
The Kansas City Star (https://bit.ly/2cY9BCF ) reports that 43-year-old Melvin McCaslin was found guilty Wednesday of voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action in the death of Samuel Hewitt, also of Independence.
Court documents say the men fought before McCaslin shot Hewitt in the head while he was “unresponsive” on the ground.
Jackson County prosecutors originally charged McCaslin with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Sentencing is set for Nov. 18.
