PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Foundation has teamed up with state and local education leaders to send 60 public school teachers to become certified as English as a Second Language instructors or bilingual teachers.

The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/2cYEeYH ) reports that the move comes at a time when two out of three students in the city are Latino and one out of four is learning English.

Almost $500,000 will be used for the training, which will be awarded to Providence, Cranston, Central Falls, Woonsocket and Pawtucket.

The program is aimed at teachers who have an interest in teaching English learners but are worried about the cost of returning to school.

A teacher who’s participating in the program says it’s something all teachers in urban districts should participate in over the coming years.
