LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan’s historic preservation office is receiving national recognition for showing the state’s contributions to modern design.

The State Historic Preservation Office has revealed the worldwide impact that people with Michigan roots had in the development of modernism through the automotive and furniture industries along with educational institutions such as the University of Michigan and the Cranbrook Academy of Art.

State Historic Preservation Officer Brian Conway and Michigan Modern Project Manager Amy Arnold visited New York last week to accept the Modernism in America Advocacy Award of Excellence from Docomomo US - a nonprofit dedicated to the documentation and conservation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods of the modern movement.

Michigan is celebrating Docomomo’s tour day throughout October with tours of important residential and commercial modernist structures.
