MISSOURI CITY, Texas (AP) - A black Houston-area high school student who dressed as a slave during a campus costume event says administrators told him to change clothes.

Brian Ibe (EE’-bay) is a senior at Ridge Point High School in Missouri City, in the Fort Bend Independent School District.

Ibe told KPRC-TV (https://bit.ly/2dq6f0g ) that he wore chains, a T-shirt spattered with fake blood and carried cotton for Tuesday’s “Decades Day.” Students were encouraged to wear clothes from different eras during homecoming week.

Ibe says he wanted to recognize the plight of his ancestors. He says administrators said his attire could cause problems and make people uncomfortable.

A district statement declined to address specifics about any students but says several were asked to change clothes considered inappropriate or a learning distraction.

Violations could lead to suspension.
