GONZALES, La. (AP) - Ascension Parish officials are meeting with family members to discuss plans to reinter the bodies of people whose graves were disturbed in last month’s flood.
Parish officials say they need the public’s help in identifying graves that were disturbed inside eight cemeteries in Sorrento, Prairieville, St. Amant and the Gonzales area.
The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/2cBadNI) parish officials did not say how many have yet to be identified but said that, overall, 16 caskets need to be reinterred and another 14 displaced vaults need to be put back in their plots.
Martin McConnell, parish government spokesman, another group of partially opened vaults had minor damage and need to be re-sealed.
The problem isn’t restricted to Ascension Parish. Graves in cemeteries throughout the region were disturbed by flooding.
