NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Four members of the New Orleans Police Department were suspended and another was reprimanded for allegedly mishandling hundreds of rape investigations.

The suspensions were confirmed by the city Wednesday. They come nearly two years after a New Orleans Inspector General’s report heavily criticized the lack of thorough investigation of sex crime allegations by some detectives.

In June, Inspector General Ed Quatrevaux (KWAH’-treh-voh) said the department has significantly improved the documenting and investigating of sex crimes.

Police spokesman Tyler Gamble said in an email the four suspensions and one reprimand followed a late July disciplinary hearing. The suspensions ranged from seven to 30 days.
