VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Authorities in Virginia say they’re investigating the death of an inmate in the detox block of a local jail.

The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that the 57-year-old died early Sunday morning. He had been locked up four days previously after a drug possession arrest.

The jail said Francis Phillip Charrette was placed into detox because of that charge as well as his medical screening and history.

Officials said he was found unresponsive in his bunk less than half an hour after the nighttime prisoner head count, during which he showed no signs of distress. Medical personnel tried to revive him. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Officials said they suspect no foul play. Autopsy results are pending.
