SPRINGFIELD, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont town has won a federal grant to extend its popular recreation trail.

The Rutland Herald (https://bit.ly/2ddBU1O ) reports that the $364,500 grant will allow Springfield officials to add a 3,250-foot extension to the Toonerville Trail.

The trail opened more than 15 years ago. It was built on the track bed of a former railway and stretches more than three miles from outskirts of downtown to the Connecticut River. Officials say the trail is used daily by between 150 and 200 people.

The town set aside an additional $45,000 this summer toward its 20 percent share of the nearly $456,000 project.

Springfield Regional Development Corp. executive director Bob Flint says the exact path of the trail hasn’t been determined.
