FLINT, Mich. (AP) - Flint is getting a $3.5 million loan to help pay for a new pipeline that will carry water from Lake Huron.
The extra pipeline was a requirement of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It wants the water to be tested for six months before Flint residents drink it.
Flint is switching to Lake Huron water as a member of a regional water agency. But it still is expected to get water from a southeastern Michigan water agency for another year.
The Michigan Strategic Fund approved a loan of up to $3.5 million on Tuesday. Flint wouldn’t have to start paying until 2018. Officials, meanwhile, will look for grants to repay the loan.
Flint’s water supply was contaminated by lead after water from the Flint River wasn’t treated to reduce corrosiveness.
