PHILADELPHIA (AP) - La Salle University will cut tuition by nearly 30 percent as it tries to reposition itself after a year of deficits, declining enrollment and layoffs.
The Roman Catholic college in Philadelphia says it will “reset” tuition from $40,400 to $28,800.
A drop in financial aid means most students won’t save $11,000 a year.
Vice President Tom Delahunt says the average student will instead save $1,000 to $1,500 a year.
The school hopes the effort will boost transparency and convince middle-class families they can afford La Salle.
Nearby Rosemont College saw its applicant pool climb by 64 percent after dropping the cost of tuition, room and board from $46,000 to $30,000 this past year.
The Catholic school says the move helped attract more families with household income of $75,000 to $125,000.
