SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) - Maine biologists are visiting Scarborough to discuss plans to make some habitat better for once-common New England cottontail rabbits.

The biologists with the state’s Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife will discuss the plans on Tuesday at the Scarborough Municipal Building. The hope is to improve part of the Scarborough Marsh Wildlife Management Area to accommodate the rabbits.

The agency says the plan will involve removing some trees, planting shrubs, and minimizing spread of invasive plants. Timber removal could take place in early 2017.

The rabbits were once seen up and down much of the Maine coast but have diminished in numbers as they have lost habitat.

A site visit is expected on Friday.
