In a tweet while watching the presidential debate Monday, former Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean questioned whether Republican nominee Donald Trump was using cocaine.

“Notice Trump sniffing all the time. Coke user?” tweeted Mr. Dean, who ran unsuccessfully for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination.

The remark quickly gained more than 7,000 retweets and more 7,772 likes, as well as provoking an onslaught of criticism.

“Said the Vermont acid freak,” responded Mikey Adams.

@GovHowardDean dude you’re such a [f***ing] loser ;)” tweeted Dan Stuckey.

“It’s a stupid comment from someone who should be taking the high ground,” tweeted Ryan Miller.

National Lampoon chimed in: “Well it is The Real Thing.”
