BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A 4-year-old has been shot and killed in Birmingham after police say he was caught in a crossfire that broke out when adults began arguing over a cell phone.

Birmingham police Sgt. Brian Shelton tells local media that police responded to a report of shots fired Saturday afternoon in the Ensley neighborhood. Police arrived to find that a child had been shot outside his home.

The child was rushed to a hospital, where he died. His name hasn’t been released.

Shelton says a preliminary investigation has revealed that the suspect went to the home of the victim and confronted adults there about a cell phone that both adults’ children were arguing over.

Both people began shooting, and the child was shot in the crossfire.

The suspect fled and remains at large.
