AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s bears can soon get back to eating doughnuts without fear of consequence.

The portion of the state bear hunt that allows hunters to use bait is ending for the year on Saturday. Hunters typically use sugary human food such as doughnuts to attract bears.

Most of the bears harvested during Maine’s bear season are lured with bait. The hunting season continues until Nov. 26, but bait is no longer an option after Saturday.

The state also allows hunters to pursue bears with hunting dogs until Oct. 28.

State wildlife regulators have said they hope this is a productive bear hunting season because the bear population has expanded in recent years.
