WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A former middle-school choir director is facing prison time after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a female student.
Authorities said Friday that 44-year-old Gary F. Smith faces 15 years to life in prison after pleading guilty this week to sexual abuse by a person in position of trust, authority or supervision, and two counts of fourth-degree rape. He is to be sentenced in December.
Authorities say that while employed as choir director at H.B. DuPont School in Hockessin, Smith repeatedly raped a student from April 2010 to August 2012, starting when she was 13 years old.
Smith was arrested in November after a two-month investigation prompted by a Crime Stoppers tip.
He was charged with 27 counts of rape and other sex crimes.
