LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Science determines sex

OPINION:

The Michigan education board is set to approve guidelines declaring that students themselves are best qualified to determine their own gender identity, and that outside confirmation from medical and mental health professionals is not required (“Michigan board approves LGBT guidance to schools,” Web, Sept. 14). In doing so the board is creating a “1984”-like world, a new reality. Students are in no position to overrule professionals in matters of sexual identity. Science and biology should control sex-identity guidelines.
