President Obama brushed aside Donald Trump’s renewed questions about his birth and eligibility for the White House, saying Friday he had hoped the presidential election would have been about more important issues.

“We got other things to attend to,” Mr. Obama said while taking questions from the press after a meeting on promoting his Pacific free trade deal. “I was pretty confident about where I was born. I think most people were as well. My hope would be the presidential elect, election reflects more serious issues than that.”

Mr. Obama has repeatedly released evidence proving he was born in Hawaii, but Mr. Trump this week refused to acknowledge it in an interview with The Washington Post.

His campaign scrambled to say that Mr. Trump does, in fact, now accept the president’s birth and eligibility for the White House — though early Friday the candidate himself again refused to say.

He was supposed to make an announcement on the matter later in the day.
