OPINION:
A terrorist rocket attack from Gaza last Wednesday, Oct. 5, landed in the Israeli town of Sderot. The Islamic State claimed responsibility and said it was part of their “Jihad against Jews.” The rocket left a scorched crater in the road while the blast shattered windows of homes and shrapnel damaged cars in the street nearby.
Israel retaliated with airstrikes against Hamas installations in Gaza, since Hamas has control of the area. Then Hamas reportedly sent a message to Israel saying it was not interested in a further escalation of tensions. In addition, Israel Radio reported that a Hamas official said it would not allow other terrorist groups within Gaza to further inflame the situation.
While this cessation of hostilities by Hamas is a welcome break in the violence, it does not mean a lasting, true peace is at hand.
