NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a 16-year-old student has been arrested for bringing a loaded gun to his New York City high school.
The incident happened at about 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Urban Assembly Maker Academy in lower Manhattan.
Police say a teacher smelled marijuana on the student and took him to the dean’s office. They say marijuana and a loaded .380-caliber gun were found in the student’s backpack.
The unidentified student has been arrested on a charge of criminal possession of a weapon.
A Department of Education spokeswoman says school officials are working with the NYPD as they investigate “this troubling incident.”
The school is one of four schools sharing the Murry Bergtraum Educational Campus on Pearl Street. The building does not have metal detectors.
