OGDEN, Utah (AP) - A Layton man has been sentenced to a year in jail after running over and killing a toddler last year while he was medically unfit to drive.
The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/2dTcVjL ) that 26-year-old Aaron Joe Burlison was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the child’s July 2015 death.
Court documents say Burlison had been driving a truck when he struck 18-month-old Lexie Smith in an apartment complex parking lot in South Ogden.
The girl was taken to a hospital and died from her injuries.
Court papers say Burlison had several medical conditions at the time that made it unsafe for him to drive, including a left eye that is closed due to an unsuccessful cornea transplant and neuropathy that causes weakness in his legs and feet.
