Springfield offers free Wi-Fi in downtown areas

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois’ capital city has launched free Wi-Fi in downtown areas.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports (https://bit.ly/2fdBmN5 ) that the wireless network is best for outdoor use and might not work indoors.

Mayor Jim Langfelder said in a recent statement that the free high speed Wi-Fi is a step toward improving economic and visitor appeal to downtown.

City officials with information technology and public works departments installed about 30 transmitting devices. The whole project is estimated to cost $170,000.

It could be expanded to include other sites next year including the Lincoln Home National Historic Site.
