HAMPDEN, Maine (AP) - A legal battle hasn’t prevented a garbage-recycling facility from breaking ground in Hampden.
The Fiberight plant aims to recycle garbage and transform it into biofuel. Hampden Mayor David Ryder says the state-of-the-art plant is the “latest technology available for what we need today.”
Hampden and dozens of other towns in Eastern Maine are partnering with the company.
Fiberight CEO Craig Stuart-Paul says he’s confident enough to proceed with ground breaking last week despite an appeal over permits by a potential competitor, the Penobscot Energy Recovery Company.
But not everyone see the value in the projects. WABI-TV reports that some towns in the region think it’s too much of a risky venture and will continue sending trash to the Penobscot Energy Recovery Company.
