PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island man is facing charges after allegedly threatening two women with a gun and then holding police at bay during an overnight standoff.
Police say an intoxicated James Lawrence threatened his girlfriend and a 46-year-old neighbor with a loaded gun on Sunday night.
Portsmouth police attempted to make contact with the 39-year-old Lawrence but he refused to answer the door and turned off all of the lights in the home.
He surrendered peacefully at about 6:30 a.m. Monday after talking to negotiators.
He was charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon and faces arraignment Monday. It could not be determined if he has a lawyer.
Police blocked off area roads during the standoff but they have since reopened.
