BAYARD, N.M. (AP) - A southern New Mexico town is on edge after several mountain lion sightings and attacks on dogs.

The Silver City Sun-News reports (https://bit.ly/2eiLYp3 ) that Bayard Police Chief Willie Kerin says the mountain lion has been seen roaming the town over the course of a week.

Someone reported seeing the big cat Wednesday night and Kerin says officers arrived at the location to find that two dogs had been killed on the porch of a home. He says another dog was killed on the street a short time later.

The police chief says officers believe the cat has been using a deer trail and have begun setting up snares and traps to try to capture it. He says the Game and Fish Department has given police permission to kill the animal.
