STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut high school coach is on leave after making the girls swimming and diving team practice in an unchlorinated pool that apparently made several of them sick.
The Stamford Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/2eAlCCa) that Rick Lewis, coach of the Westhill-Stamford girls co-op, and an unnamed assistant coach have been instructed not to communicate with team members while officials investigate the incident.
School officials say team members complained about pool conditions before last week’s practice but were still made to swim in the waters. Later, a number of them experienced “adverse physical reactions” that officials declined to disclose.
Health inspectors found the Westhill High pool had no chlorine. It was reopened Monday after being re-chlorinated.
Lewis, who has coached the school’s boys and girls swimming teams since 1979, didn’t immediately comment.
