MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a suburban New York tax preparer has been sentenced to more than four years in prison after he was found guilty of filing bogus tax returns for his clients and under-reporting his own income.
The Journal News in White Plains reports (https://lohud.us/2feC2RU ) 59-year-old Samuel Gentle of Mount Vernon was also sentenced on Tuesday to pay a $125,000 fine and more than $295,000 in back taxes.
Gentle owned the tax-preparation businesses GenGen and GenGen Financial. Prosecutors say he filed more than 3,000 tax returns a year from 2010 to 2014.
Prosecutors say those tax returns had a pattern of false and inflated dedications for business expenses and charity gifts. They say the IRS lost more than $550,000 as a result of Gentle’s crimes.
