COMPTON, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a Los Angeles County sheriff’s sergeant who died after his patrol car crashed this week had suffered a heart attack.

Sgt. Al Lopez died at a hospital following the single-vehicle crash Monday while responding to a pursuit call from other deputies.

Coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter tells City News Service Wednesday that an autopsy determined the 47-year-old Lopez had a heart attack. His death was listed as the result of natural causes.

Lopez, a 26-year department veteran, is survived by a wife and two adult children. Funeral services are pending.

No one else was hurt in the crash.
