PHOENIX (AP) - A 26-year-old Phoenix woman arrested in connection with a double killing in Phoenix has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.
A Maricopa County Superior Court judge on Wednesday sentenced Elise Garcia on her Sept. 29 guilty plea to second-degree murder.
Garcia was arrested in March 2013 on charges of first-degree murder and concealing bodies.
Landscapers uncovered a box containing the remains of two people in the backyard of a house previously owned by Alan Champagne’s mother.
The 45-year-old Champagne is Garcia’s ex-boyfriend and a co-defendant in the homicide case. He awaits trial.
Phoenix police have said DNA confirmed the remains were a man and woman missing since 2011 and that detectives learned that Garcia participated in the killings.
