KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Knox County school officials are making some changes to attract and hire more top teachers.
Interim Superintendent of Schools Buzz Thomas tells the Knoxville News Sentinel (https://bit.ly/2dCrDtX ) that the district will be revamping its website, improving the candidate screening process and hiring a recruiter who will be establishing relationships between area colleges and some of their top college students.
Thomas says he was inspired by the recruiting strategy of Teach For America, a high-profile nonprofit that places top college graduates into charter and public schools around the country.
He says Teach for America is effective with on-campus recruiting, and he wants the school district to follow their example.
Knox County School’s entry-level pay for teachers with a bachelor’s degree is $37,180, below the three other major metro areas in Tennessee.
