SALEM, N.H. (AP) - The town of Salem, New Hampshire, has opened its rail trail after 20 years of planning.
The $1.3 million project was opened Friday.
The Eagle-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2erkTmZ) construction of the 1.1-mile first phase of the nearly two-mile pedestrian and bike trail began in April. It had been delayed for a year because of rising costs. Work on the second phase will start next year.
Grants received through the state Department of Transportations have funded 75 percent of the work while the nonprofit Friends organization has contributed the rest. Tax credits also have helped.
The second phase is expected to cost about $408,000.
When complete, the rail trail will connect to the Windham rail trail and extend to downtown Derry.
