KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) - Mohave County officials are in talks with state and federal wildlife managers to establish habitat for desert tortoises near Kingman.
The Kingman Daily Miner reports (https://bit.ly/2e80QIw ) that Mohave County Supervisors Gary Watson and Buster Johnson met with wildlife officials on Tuesday as a preliminary step toward the habitat, which would help protect the endangered Mohave tortoise population.
Johnson says the Habitat Conservation Planning would allow economic development, but also protect the species.
Ultimately the federal government has the authority to develop a Habitat Conservation Planning with or without input and cooperation from Mohave County.
