BOSTON (AP) - Boston Children’s Hospital has received the final approval from Massachusetts health officials for a proposed $1 billion expansion.
The Massachusetts Public Health Council, which oversees state health rules and medical projects, gave the go-ahead Thursday for the planned 11-story building at the hospital’s Longwood campus and an outpatient center in Brookline, the Boston Globe reports (https://bit.ly/2dtAX3d ).
The decision was expected, considering Republican Gov. Charlie Baker, staff at the Department of Health and Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh have signaled their support for the project.
Council members turned down a request by some activists to save a small outdoor garden that will be demolished. Friends of Prouty Garden held a rally in front of the State House before the vote.
Some critics argue the project will ultimately drive up medical costs.
